Festival Wrap-Up

Hey out there,

The first annual Lysten Music Festival has come and gone, but I assure you, the memories will remain! A successful first run of the festival was held at the end of September and we saw some incredible talent hit the stage. We kicked it off with Toronto’s Bravestation Saturday morning (with their Mom’s and supporters dancing in the stands, so cute!); a complete rock’n'roll showcase by Die Mannquin Saturday night (which you can view on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKgkMXuVwTY); we were treated to the atmospheric instrumentals of My Dad vs Yours; and a total blow your mind set by The Sadies Sunday night followed by local heros Hollerado to close the festival down. There was such a wide variety of talent. I can honestly say every band was absolutely solid and exciting. To think that Canada has so much homegrown talent, it’s mind boggling.

I was lucky enough to have backstage access to the bands (yes, I know, that’s amazing and this is my chance to brag about it :) ), so I had a chance to chill out and chat with many of them. I can say this, these musicians live and breathe the rock’n'roll lifestyle. Literally, bands were rolling out of their vans, in the midst of or concluding tours. It was so amazing to talk to them. No, they don’t make a lot of money at it, but their passion and dedication to the music is admirable.  There were also some cool exchanges between up-and-comers and seasoned professionals. I am proud to say I had a hand in delivering a demo by The Woody Allens straight into the hands of The Sadies. I also had the chance to chat with the all-girl band Apocolypstic. The girls recently bought a house together in Ottawa so they can literally live, breathe and write music 24-7. They also said they’re going to start a show on YouTube about their lives, so keep an eye out for that! Local rockers The Weeds were a common fixture on the festival grounds. They opened up the festival Friday night with a launch party at the stadium (in an awesome bar overlooking the stadium!) and played a sweet show Saturday afternoon. They said it was their first time on a huge, professional stage, but it suited them well! The Weeds were right at home and I think they should get used to that feeling. they have a forthcoming album, hopefully in the next 6-8 months, so keep posted on that release through their website http://www.theweeds.ca/fr_intro.cfm.

A lot of hype for the festival was based upon the fact that it was held at a baseball stadium. I am now convinced that there is not a more suitable venue available for an event like this. Every band I talked to was totally digging it. There was shelter inside the stadium when it was rainy, food, stadium seating, suites for the bands overlooking the site, vendors on the field. It was amazing! With the stage and tents set up on the field, it completely transformed the space into party central. Seriously, you need to put a reminder in your calendar for next September to come out and see, hear and experience.

Given my insiders perspective on the whole festival, I will tell you that plans are in the works for Lysten Festival 2011. Be tuned into lysten.ca over the year and keep in touch with us. Let us know if you were in the crowds that weekend, let us know who you would like to hear. WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! :D

Here are a few pictures, with more to come at a later date!

Straightening out the rumors

Hi all,

So there’s been talk on facebook and Twitter about Elliott Brood and Born Ruffians. Unfortunately, they will be not performing at the Lysten Music Festival this weekend. I know I know…it’s really too bad. Buuuut, organizers are working right now to fill those prime spots and it’s not exactly like we’re down to slim pickins when it comes to the line-up.

Perhaps you can pick up your spirits with Hollerado, The Sadies, or what about Adam Saikaley or Laurent Bourque? Stick with us folks, it’s just a minor bump on the road to awesomeness. :D

Have you bought your advance tickets yet? Go to http://lysten.ca/lystenfestival/tickets/ and order now. We’re getting close. 2 more days!!!!! And stay tuned to our website and see who we’ll be inviting to join the party! You never know, they may just be one of your favourites.

Lysten Up! The Woody Allens

Hello out there,

Here’s the second entry in my Lysten Up! series which offers you a little talk and a little taste of the sweet bands we have lined up for the first annual Lysten Music Festival. Are you getting as excited as I am? Only 5 more days! Keep your eyes peeled for links to online ticket sales on our tickets page. It should be up by tomorrow.

It’s difficult to find information about this band online, but it in no way means that it’s not worth tracking down! On their myspace page, The Woody Allens describe their music as a blend of country, folk, and roots.  As far as I can tell, their myspace page is their main online profile, which you can find at http://www.myspace.com/thewoodyallens. Band members include Mack Edwards (guitar/vocals), Brent Hebert (drums/vocal), Michael Middleton (bass/vocal), and Lynn Seward (organ/piano/vocal). They have five tunes available on their page for your listening pleasure.

TOP PICKS:

  1. Close to Home
  2. Favourite Dead End

Lynn Seward gives a stirring vocal on “Close to Home,” which is listed as a new addition to the playlist. She expresses such a sense of longing in this piece and creates an atmosphere of limitless space. Her voice may be pure, but it does not lack in power with regard to strength and its ability to move the listener. The song is simplistic in its conception, but has a memorable impact. Beautifully crafted.

My other top pick, “Favourite Dead End” listed as new on their page. I hear a strong influence of Blue Rodeo in this one, which they handle well! It’s not just the addition of harmonica that causes me to make the comparison. Whoever takes the lead vocals (they list all the male members as vocalists on the page) his voice at times sounds like a young Jim Cuddy, which is the most sincere compliment (I saw them for the first time in concert this summer at the Nepean Equestrian park, amazing amazing show!!)

The band is currently unsigned, but I would love to hear them put together an Eepee. I think this group could do some really amazing things to these pieces in a studio. I believe that they are multi-talented musicians who are totally holding out on us. If you only listen to the tracks on the little player, you only get a sample of what they can do. Toward the bottom of the page there’s links to a music video and you’ll see Seward playing guitar and one of the guys on stand-up bass. In the video below that, they’re totally rockin out on a blue grass tune with stand-up bass and mandolin. While they may still be deciding on the appropriate direction for their music, they’ve got some solid tunes under their belt for a debut Eepee. I’m looking forward to meeting them at the festival and finding out more about this somewhat unknown, but very talented group. Happy listening :) and let me know what you think :)

Check it out, we have a line-up!

Drum roll please…okay, maybe not the entire line-up, but we have the beginnings of a line-up. Are you enjoying the suspense as much as I am? Seriously, you never know who’s going to pop up on that list today, tomorrow, in the next hour. Who knows what Lysten has up their sleeves?!

You’ll notice that they’ve added some new bands to the roster, including Winchester Warm and Songs from a Room. I need to more about these bands, so look for an upcoming blog to open up a conversation on them. Click on the link below for the schedule and be sure to check back often as they continue to fill in the blanks. You never know when your favourite artist will be added.

p.s. are you following us on Twitter yet? It’s really cool because most of the bands know each other. So as we speak, they’re tweeting about each others shows and the festival. I’m thinking more and more that the Lysten Festival is going to be a big party for all of the bands because they all know each other. And guess what?! It’s a party that you’re invited to. You just have to show up! 7 day countdown friends, it’s going to be sweet. Okay, this p.s. is turning into another blog entry. Until next time!
